Football Career
Carey began playing Australian rules football and cricket as a teenager, and as he grew older, he began to play football at a higher level, competing for Glenelg in the South Australia National Football League (SANFL) reserve division among adults at the age of 15. Carey was named to South Australia’s side for the 2008 AFL Under 18 Championship in 2008, but he did not participate. He was also a member of the 2008 AIS/AFL Academy intake. In 2009, he advanced further by representing South Australia in the 2009 AFL Under 18 Championships, as well as winning the SANFL reserves premiership with Glenelg.

Carey’s performance in the 2017-18 Big Bash League earned him his One Day International (ODI) appearance for Australia on 19 January 2018, replacing an injured Tim Paine. On 3 February 2018, he played his T20I debut for Australia against New Zealand.

Controversy
Alex Carey had moved off the bails while Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique was batting on the second day of the first Test in Perth, he could have sparked another controversy.
Marnus Labuschagne collected the ball at short leg and passed it to Carey, who expressed towards the stumps as an oblivious Shafique appeared to lift his lower foot for a split second.
Despite replays indicating that the batsman was run out, Carey did not remove the bails. Pakistan eventually declared at 132-2 at Perth Stadium on Friday, still 355 runs behind Australia’s 487.
