She participated in a few state-level baseball events as well. She altered her direction in the tenth grade and resolved to become a fashion model. Additionally, she said
“I realized that I was only playing the game because it ran in the family,”
She later remarked:

Career
At the beginning of her career, Padukone became well-known thanks to a television advertisement for the soap Liril. She also modeled for numerous other companies and goods. She made her runway debut for designer Suneet Varma at the Lakme Fashion Week in 2005, and she was named Model of the Year at the Kingfisher Fashion Awards. When Padukone appeared in a well-known print advertisement for the 2006 Kingfisher Calendar, her profile soared; the designer Wendell Rodricks remarked,
“Since Aishwarya Rai, we haven’t had a girl as beautiful and fresh.”
Padukone moved to Mumbai at the age of 21 and stayed at her aunt’s house. Her appearance in the music video for Himesh Reshammiya’s song “Naam Hai Tera” from the album Aap Ka Surror in 2006 helped her attain popularity.
Soon, Padukone started to get offers for movie roles. She enrolled in a course at Anupam Kher’s film academy since she thought she was too inexperienced as an actor. After much media speculation, the director Farah Khan decided to cast her for a role in her next movie, then known as Happy New Year, after spotting her in Reshammiya’s song video.
Filmmaking success and professional setbacks (2006–2011)
Aishwarya (2006), a Kannada movie under the direction of Indrajit Lankesh, marked Padukone’s acting debut. She was paired with Upendra in the title role of the romantic comedy, a remake of the Telugu film Manmadhudu. Commercial success was achieved by the movie Happy New Year by Farah Khan. It had been put on hold by the end of 2006, and Khan had replaced it with the melodrama Om Shanti Om (2007), which starred Deepika Padukone. The principal actor was Shah Rukh Khan, and Padukone played a star in the 1970s as well as an aspiring actress later on. Padukone studied the actresses Helen and Hema Malini‘s body language by watching several of their films in advance.
Padukone’s next role was in Siddharth Anand’s 2008 romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno, in which she portrayed one of Ranbir Kapoor’s love interests. In 2009 her first film of the year, Chandni Chowk to China, a kung fu comedy starring Akshay Kumar, had her in the dual roles of Indian and Chinese twin sisters. It was one of the most widely distributed Indian films ever released internationally and was produced by Warner Bros. In the romance drama Love Aaj Kal from writer-director Imtiaz Ali, she co-starred with Saif Ali Khan. Padukone played Meera Pandit, a career-driven lady, in the movie, which explored the shifting significance of relationships among young people. Love Aaj Kal emerged as the third-highest-grossing Hindi movie of 2009 with a global gross of 1.2 billion (US$15 million).
In 2010, Padukone had five movies come out. She portrayed the understanding girlfriend of a troubled man in the psychological suspense film Karthik Calling Karthik (Farhan Akhtar). She appeared in Sajid Khan’s comedy picture Housefull, which earned 1.15 billion (US$14 million), together with an ensemble cast led by Akshay Kumar, and it was her most commercially successful film of the year. In the movie Dum Maaro Dum, Padukone debuted in 2011 with an item number. She described it as
“The wildest song any actress has done”
The song’s sexual themes sparked debate and even led to a court action for indecency. Her next film, the sociopolitical drama Aarakshan, directed by Prakash Jha, was about caste-based reservations in India. Trade media had high hopes for the movie, but it ultimately failed commercially. Her final performance that year was in the comedy Desi Boyz with John Abraham and Kumar, a part that did little to advance her career. Critics said Padukone had “lost her sparkle” after a string of poorly regarded movies.
Established actress (2012–2016)
According to Padukone, the romantic comedy Cocktail (2012), which was directed by Homi Adajania and starred her in the lead role, was a turning point in her career. In the opinion of Raja Sen, she had successfully demonstrated that
“She was a stunning girl who can also act.”
Cocktail, a narrative about a man’s friendship with two very different women, an impulsive party girl and a submissive girl next door, is set in London. Padukone chose to play Veronica in order to broaden her horizons as a performer when producer Dinesh Vijan gave her the option during the script narration. She worked out a lot and adhered to a strict diet to accomplish the physical needs of her character because portraying the role was both a creative and physical challenge for her. The reviews for the movie were mixed, but Devesh Sharma of Filmfare praised Padukone’s performance, calling it
“The soul of the film,” adding that she excels in every scene, whether as the jealousy ridden girl out to destroy herself or as the material girl who enjoys sex, drugs and rock and roll.”
Padukone received Best Actress nods for Cocktail at numerous award shows, including Filmfare, Screen, and IIFA. The movie was a financial triumph at the box office.
Padukone’s presence in four of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2013 made it a crucial year for her career. She reconnected with Saif Ali Khan in Race 2, an ensemble action thriller directed by Abbas-Mustan and serving as a sequel to Race (2008). Despite the majority of unfavorable reviews, the movie made a successful total of 1.62 billion (US$20 million). She was paired with Ranbir Kapoor in the romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani by Ayan Mukerji. She was cast as “shy wallflower” Naina Talwar, a role that contrasted with the beautiful roles she was known for playing.
Her next role required her to assume a Tamil accent as she played a Tamil girl running away from her father (a local don) in Rohit Shetty’s action-comedy Chennai Express alongside Shah Rukh Khan. Film critic Aseem Chhabra commented,
“Padukone is delightful in the film—beautiful, smiling, and often a lot more playful and funnier than Khan.”
While there was disagreement over her accent, her performance was praised. One of the highest-grossing Indian movies is Chennai Express, which took in about 3.95 billion (US$49 million).
Padukone next appeared alongside Ranveer Singh in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s rendition of the Shakespearean tragedy Romeo and Juliet, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. She played Leela, a Gujarati woman modeled after Juliet. After a lawsuit was filed against Bhansali, Padukone, and Singh for “offending the religious sentiments” of the Hindu community by depicting sex and violence under a title that referenced the life of Rama, the movie’s original title of Ram-Leela was changed. for instance, Despite the demonstrations surrounding its debut, critics generally praised the movie.
In 2015’s comedy-drama Piku, directed by Shoojit Sircar, Padukone played a feisty Bengali teenager who takes care of her hypochondriac father (played by Amitabh Bachchan), following her involvement in Homi Adajania’s online feminist film, My Choice She was drawn to the portrayal of a genuine father-daughter relationship since she believed it was uncommon in Hindi film. Padukone demonstrates
“What she is capable of when given something more to do than look pretty and be the crazy-dance girl at parties,”
According to Tanmaya Nanda of Business Standard, who commended the film’s feminist tone. Padukone won numerous accolades for her performance in Piku, including the second-best Actress awards from Filmfare and Screen.
She reconnected with Ranveer Singh and Sanjay Leela Bhansali in the historical drama Bajirao Mastani, which is about a fatal adulterous affair. Bajirao, a Maratha general, was portrayed by Singh, and his first and second wives were played by Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone. Padukone studied kalarippayattu, horseback riding, and sword fighting in order to play the warrior-princess Mastani. The fourth-highest-grossing Bollywood movie of the year, Bajirao Mastani brought in over 3.5 billion rupees (US$44 million). Padukone was “riveting,” according to Anupama Chopra, although Subhash K. Jha felt that
“She was way too subtle and silken, and not steely enough.”
Bajirao Mastani won Best Film at the 61st Filmfare Awards, and Padukone was nominated for Best Actress for the second time that year.
Professional Advancement and film controversy (2017–present)
Deepika Padukone’s debut project in Hollywood was the action movie XXX: Return of Xander Cage (2017), in which Padukone starred opposite Vin Diesel. Tirdad Derakhshani of the Philadelphia Inquirer called the movie “abysmal” and thought Padukone’s ability was squandered there, but Frank Scheck of the Hollywood Reporter thought Padukone “practically steals the film.” A large portion of the movie’s $345 million global box office take came from China. Padukone was nominated for three Teen Choice Awards.
In the historical movie Padmaavat, which was her third project with Bhansali and Singh, Padukone played Rani Padmavati, a Rajput queen who performs Jauhar (self-immolation) to defend herself from the Muslim invader Alauddin Khilji. She was emotionally worn out by the ordeal and found it difficult to portray her character’s bravery in quiet. She investigated the numerous Padmavati representations and read historical accounts of the time period. Right-wing Hindu organizations believed the movie implied a romantic relationship between Padmavati and Khilji, they violently protested and offered a reward for the heads of Padukone and Bhansali. The movie was delayed, and then after multiple changes, it was approved for release.
In the action movie Pathaan (2023), directed by Siddharth Anand and set in the YRF Spy Universe, Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan were reunited. When right-wing Hindutva organizations judged Padukone’s appearance in a saffron bikini in the song “Besharam Rang” to be unpleasant and indecent, it caused controversy. After making certain changes to the song sequence, the Central Board of Film Certification gave the movie the go-ahead for release. According to Saibal Chatterjee,
“Padukone pulls off the dual act of an irrepressible famine fatale and a committed soldier with elan”.
Padukone appeared briefly (listed as a special appearance) in the action film Jawan, her second project with Khan that year. Hindustan Times and The Week reviewers remarked on how much her partnership with Khan aided the film Both Pathaan and Jawan set numerous records at the box office for Hindi movies, grossing more than 10 billion (US$130 million) each to rank among the highest-grossing films in Hindi cinema.
In Nag Ashwin’s bilingual Telugu-Hindi science fiction picture Kalki 2898 AD, Padukone will next appear opposite Prabhas. She will also star with Hrithik Roshan in Fighter, another action movie for Anand. She will also join the cast of Ajay Devgn’s Singham Again, the action sequel to Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe film series.
