 As a Child star 

A talent scout noticed Mackay in 2002 when he was attending school and invited him to try out for a part in P. J. Hogan’s 2003 Peter Pan movie. His first paid acting part came after attending a workshop when he was cast as Curly, one of the Lost Boys.

He was cast as Riccio in the 2005 film adaptation of Cornelia Funke’s highly successful children’s book The Thief Lord when he was just 13 years old. In addition, he was chosen for the title part in the BBC three-part television series Johnny and the Bomb, which was based on Terry Pratchett’s book of the same name. MacKay has also done some television work, such as roles in The Brief, Footprints in the Snow, and Rose and Maloney.

MacKay portrayed Aron, the youngest of the four Bielski brothers, in the 2008 film Defiance. He played Harry in Clive Owen’s 2009 film The Boys Are Back. In the musical film Hunky Dory, which was directed by Marc Evans and was set in Swansea in the 1970s, MacKay costarred with Kimberley Nixon, Aneurin Barnard, and Minnie Driver.

In 2014, MacKay portrayed Joe, a 20-year-old who was facing discrimination in 1984 Britain, in the true-life film Pride, which also starred Bill Nighy. In Natalie Abrahami’s Young Vic production of Eugene O’Neill’s coming-of-age drama Ah, Wilderness! (2015), Mackay played the title role of Richard Miller.

In July 2015, MacKay played Lewis Aldridge in the two-part television version of Sadie Jones’s first book, The Outcast, produced by the BBC. 

In Matthew Warchus’s production of Harold Pinter’s play The Caretaker, which aired from March 29 to May 14, 2016, MacKay played the role of Mick at London’s Old Vic Theatre, opposite Timothy Spall and Daniel Mays. MacKay played Ben’s eldest son Bodevan in the 2016 movie Captain Fantastic

MacKay played outlaw Ned Kelly in Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang, which was released in 2019. Under Sam Mendes’ direction, MacKay portrayed the principal character of William Schofield, a young British soldier in World War I, in the same year.1917 movie received three technical prizes and was nominated in nine other categories in addition to Best Picture at the 92nd Oscar Lily-Rose Depp, Mackay stars in Nathalie Biancheri’s thriller Wolf, main photography for which started in Ireland in August 2020.

In December 2021 after making its debut as Ireland’s entry at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2021. IndieWire defined his performance as “the best performance of his still-rising career” in Wolf.

MacKay featured in Munich: The Edge of War, a Netflix original film directed by Christian Schwochow, in 2022. In October 2021, he was chosen to star opposite Tilda Swinton and Stephen Graham in Joshua Oppenheimer’s Golden Age musical picture, The End was revealed in May 2022 that Mackay and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett will co-star in the revenge thriller Femme. MacKay acted in the science fiction picture The Beast in 2023.
