The family migrated in 1958 to the Bhuleshwar suburb of Bombay (now Mumbai), where they lived in a chawl (a communal building often offering two-room flats on minimal rent). The increasingly unstable political atmosphere in Aden made this return possible.
Until the 1970s, his family lived in a humble two-bedroom apartment in Bhuleshwar, Mumbai. After migrating to India, their financial standing significantly improved, but Ambani lived in a communal culture, traveled using public transportation, and received no allowance. Professional Career
Under Indira Gandhi, the Indian government allowed the private sector to manufacture PFY (Polyester Filament Yarn) in 1980. Ambani’s father, Dhirubhai Ambani, requested a permit to establish a PFY manufacturing facility. After some arduous struggle, this license, also called License Raj, was granted to Dhirubhai, who started setting up a new business. Ambani was pursuing his education at Stanford in an MBA. However, in 1981, Dhirubhai took his eldest son out of school to assist him in constructing the PFY industry.
Ambani still needed to finish his university degree but could not since he was in charge of Reliance’s vertical integration, which involved up-gradation from the textiles sector to polyester threads and then to the petrochemicals used to make the yarns. The company also offered goods and services to the retail and telecoms sectors.
They created the firm with the idea that everyone should contribute and play their part in the company.
Even though Ambani had no expertise, Dhirubhai treated him like a business partner and let him contribute and bring innovations. Working from scratch and experimenting with new things later helped Ambani and his brother to make independent decisions when their father fell ill from a stroke in 1986.
Establishing Reliance Infocomm Limited (RIL)
Later, Mukesh Ambani founded Reliance Infocomm Limited, currently known as Reliance Communications Limited. It specializes in managing projects that primarily involve information and communications technologies. At 24, Ambani constructed the Patalganga petrochemical plant. At that time, their business was already substantially investing in oil refineries and petrochemicals,
The Reliance Commercial Corporation, which later developed into RIL from a commodity-trading operation, initially worked from a single rented room, which Dhirubhai and his cousin established in the same year.
Despite wealth, success, and global recognition, Ambani never carries a credit card or cash. Someone always pays for him. He once revealed in an interview,
