Sean Colin Williams is a Zimbabwean worldwide cricketer who currently captains the national team in Tests.  Sean Williams primarily bats as an all-rounder in all formats. Zimbabwe Cricket selected him as a captain in September 2019, after Hamilton Masakadza retired from international cricket. Later the same month, Williams led Zimbabwe for the first time in the opening Twenty20 International (T20I) match of the 2019-20 Singapore Tri-Nation Series against Nepal.

Cricket Career

In the 2004 Under-19 World Cup, he was Zimbabwe’s greatest batsman, scoring 157 runs at 31.40 and taking five wickets. He represented the under-19 team at the World Cup in Sri Lanka, which defeated England in 2006.

Williams plays first-class cricket for the Matabeleland Tuskers. He had his greatest domestic score for the Westerns against the Centrals in 2006-07 when he hit 76 and 129 in both innings of a 77-run triumph.

In October 2018, he was appointed to the Tshwane Spartans’ team for the initial Mzansi Super League T20 event. In December 2020, he was selected to appear for the Tuskers in the 2020-21 Logan Cup.

Williams was supposed to be called up during the player strike in April 2004. Even a year later, despite having only played one first-class game, he was selected for Zimbabwe’s tour to South Africa.

He rejected a central contract the following month, preferring to seek a more stable career abroad, but he changed his mind three months later, returning to play for Zimbabwe. Determined by injuries, the on-and-off farrago reappeared in 2008, when he again left for an agreement in South Africa to return days later.

Williams made 178 runs for Zimbabwe XI and Ireland in the 2010-11 ICC Intercontinental Cup.  Moreover, Colin scored his Test debut vs West Indies in the second Test at Roseau in 2013, hitting 31 and 6 runs.

On February 19, 2015, he scored an undefeated 76 runs in the Cricket World Cup against the UAE. Zimbabwe was struggling at 177/5 when he arrived at the crease. Finally, he led the side to victory by scoring 76 runs off 65 balls, including 7 fours and one six.

He arrived at his first test century in his third match. In July 2016, he scored at number eight in the second inning against New Zealand in Bulawayo, scoring 119 off 148 deliveries. Williams got the fastest century by a Zimbabwe batsman in an ODI match in April 2019, against the United Arab Emirates, off 75 balls.

Controversies

Williams was forced to withdraw from the team’s trip to Bangladesh in October-November 2014 due to a disagreement with then-head coach Stephen Mangongo. However, after Dav Whatmore was chosen as head coach, Williams was reinstated to the team and made the 2015 World Cup group. Williams appeared in Zimbabwe’s World Cup 2015 Pool B match against the UAE. 

He hit an unbeaten 76 to assist his team across the line by four wickets. Later in the sporting event, in a do-or-die game against Ireland, Williams scored 96 but was dismissed when Zimbabwe needed 32 runs off 19 deliveries. Zimbabwe eventually lost that game by 5 runs, ending its World Cup dreams terribly.
